LS Cable & System said on the 12th that its subsidiary Korea Future Materials has completed the Gunsan plant and begun full-scale mass production of eco-friendly advanced materials. The Gunsan plant produces eco-friendly advanced materials such as recycled copper, Cuflake for copper foil, and copper alloys.
Korea Future Materials was established in 2023 to strengthen expertise in the materials business based on the copper processing technology LS Cable & System has built up so far.
The recycled copper to be made at the Gunsan plant is produced by recycling copper resources recovered from waste cables and other sources. It can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared with mining.
Cuflake is a new material for copper foil that LS Cable & System developed for the first time in the world. It is a product that simplifies the manufacturing process by applying copper flakes (flake) instead of conventional copper wire.
Through this investment, LS Cable & System plans to build a resource-circulating supply chain that connects eco-friendly materials to cable production, a first in Korea's cable industry. It also plans to strengthen its North American value chain in connection with major affiliates such as LS Greenlink, Gaon Cable, LS Eco Energy, and LS Eco Advanced Materials.
Korea Future Materials is pushing to build a plant near LS Greenlink in Virginia, U.S. It plans to expand its push into the North American market and strengthen its resource-circulating business structure by linking with the LS Cable & System affiliate supply chain.
Jeon Ik-su, CEO of Korea Future Materials, said, "With the completion of the Gunsan plant as a turning point, we will expand the eco-friendly resource-circulation business and strengthen our capacity to supply high value-added materials needed in the electrification era."
