Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) said on the 8th it held a kickoff meeting for "KEPCO Energy AI Partners" at KEPCO's South Seoul headquarters to drive an artificial intelligence (AI) transformation of the power industry.
The event was organized to build an AI cooperation network across the power ecosystem by bringing together the government, public sector, private sector, and academia with KEPCO.
KEPCO, which in March formalized its vision to become "the world's best energy AI platform operator" by declaring an "AI transformation management innovation," formed this council to use the latest AI technologies to solve the growing challenges of power grid operations amid the expansion of renewable energy.
KEPCO determined that because more than 90% of cutting-edge AI technologies are developed under private leadership, it is essential to go beyond simple support and build an all-around, mutually beneficial collaboration in which institutions, corporations, and academia create synergy together.
At the meeting, KEPCO declared the vision of "the future of the power industry ecosystem consolidated by AI, Power AX Partners," and announced four key initiatives to realize it: institutional improvements, achieving outcomes, growth support, and information exchange.
Attendees included KEPCO's head of AI Innovation, as well as officials from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment's Climate Energy New Industry Division, the Korea Electrical Manufacturers Association, the National Information Society Agency (NIA), and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH). In addition, leaders from 19 leading domestic AI specialist corporations, including Rebellions, MAUM.AI, DataStreams, and Superb AI, took part to discuss ways to integrate the power industry and AI technologies.
Ju Jae-gak, head of KEPCO's AI Innovation, said, "The future of the power industry depends on 'super-collaboration' that combines power infrastructure with the private sector's cutting-edge AI technologies," adding, "We will spare no full support so this council becomes a core platform that backs Korea's rise into the AI G3 and secures leadership in the global power AI market."
