Work to tow HMM's cargo ship, which caught fire while at anchor in the Strait of Hormuz, to the nearby Port of Dubai will begin today.
According to the shipping industry on the 6th, HMM has secured a vessel to tow the damaged ship "Namu" and plans to start the operation from this afternoon. It is widely expected to arrive at its destination, the Port of Dubai, on the afternoon of the 7th or the morning of the 8th.
The investigation into the cause of the accident will begin after Namu docks at the Port of Dubai. Personnel from Korean Register in Dubai and a Researcher from the Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal plan to take part in the investigation.
The accident occurred at about 8:40 p.m. on the 4th, Korea time, in waters near the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Strait of Hormuz. At the time, there were 24 crew members on board, including six Korean nationals, but there were no casualties.
Jeon Jeong-geun, Chairperson of HMM's maritime labor union, said in a phone call with some outlets that "a loud explosion was heard at the scene of the accident, which startled and flustered everyone," adding, "the sound was so loud it could be heard from ships anchored nearby, and the impact was considerable."
However, Jeon, the Chairperson, regarding some reports that spray shot up in the engine room of the damaged ship, noted, "there are various 'someone said' reports, and this seems to be something that needs to be identified," expressing the view that confirmation is necessary.
