The Kia Carnival, a large recreational vehicle (RV) known as the "national family car," has surpassed 3 million in cumulative global sales 28 years after its launch.
According to Kia on the 26th, from its 1998 launch through March this year, the Carnival sold 1,387,674 units in Korea and 1,618,401 units overseas. Global cumulative sales total 3,000,675 units. The Carnival earlier topped 1 million cumulative sales in 2006 and 2 million in 2019.
Since its debut, the Carnival has sold an average of more than 100,000 units annually, establishing itself as Kia's flagship large RV. Sales have especially trended upward since the fourth-generation Carnival launched in 2020.
Global sales rose from 88,801 units in 2020 to 126,717 in 2021, 131,777 in 2022, 147,782 in 2023, and 172,525 in 2024. Last year, 188,817 units were sold, marking the highest annual sales on record.
In Korea, 78,218 units were sold, ranking third after the Sorento and Avante.
A key factor behind the Carnival's long-running popularity is its solid footing in the large RV market. When first unveiled in 1998, the Carnival stood out as a rare large minivan in Korea, drawing attention with a design that differentiated it from existing vans.
The addition of a hybrid lineup also boosted sales. Starting with the enhanced "The New Carnival" introduced in 2023, Kia added a hybrid model, which is seen as reducing the burden of fuel economy and maintenance costs—long cited as weaknesses of large RVs.
Kia also applied "E-Ride," which reduces vehicle body sway, and "E-Handling," which improves stability on curved roads, saying these features enhanced its completeness as a family car.
The Carnival was named "Best Family Car" in the 2023 Cars.com Best of Awards. In February, it won the minivan category at the Car and Driver "2026 Editors' Choice Awards."
A Kia official said, "The Carnival is Kia's representative large RV and continues to maintain strong competitiveness in the global market."
