Samsung SDI will supply electric vehicle batteries to Mercedes-Benz of Germany. This is the first time Samsung SDI will supply electric vehicle batteries to Mercedes-Benz.
Samsung SDI said on the 20th in the morning at Andaz Seoul Gangnam in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul, that it signed a multi-year contract with Mercedes-Benz to supply next-generation electric vehicle batteries. Through this contract, Samsung SDI will supply high-performance batteries to be installed in Mercedes-Benz's next-generation electric vehicles.
The batteries use "high-nickel NCM (nickel, cobalt, manganese)" materials that can deliver high energy density to maximize driving range, and they also apply long-life, high-output performance and a safety solution developed with Samsung SDI's proprietary technology.
Mercedes-Benz plans to install the batteries supplied by Samsung SDI in upcoming small and midsize electric sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and coupe models to target the next-generation EV market.
In addition, the two companies plan to continuously expand their strategic partnership in future mobility, including advanced development of next-generation batteries.
A Samsung SDI official said, "This partnership is the fusion of the two companies' innovation DNA," adding, "It is significant in that we secured battery orders to lead the global electric vehicle market."
The event was attended by President and CEO Choi Joo-sun of Samsung SDI; Jo Han-je, executive vice president and head of Global Sales, Strategic Marketing Office; Ola Källenius, chairman of Mercedes-Benz; Joerg Burzer, Mercedes-Benz chief technology officer (CTO); and Mathias Vaitl, head of Mercedes-Benz Korea.
