Integrated paper company Hankuk Paper is expanding the applications of its eco-friendly paper packaging "GreenShield" in the food and beverage packaging market.
Hankuk Paper said on the 17th that GreenShield is being applied to the next-generation eco-friendly packaging solution "VeraPack," broadening its use cases.
Recently, in the packaging market, concerns over plastic raw material supply due to Middle East risks and the de-plastic trend have combined to increase interest in paper-based packaging. According to Hankuk Paper and other paper companies, consultations related to paper packaging have risen 30% to 40% from before, and reviews of plastic alternative materials are expanding, centered on the food and retail industries.
GreenShield is an eco-friendly paper packaging developed by Hankuk Paper. The product is notable for securing water and oil resistance without using plastic materials such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). It can also be recycled as paper and naturally degrades in about three months when landfilled. In addition, it proved its eco-friendliness by obtaining Europe's biodegradable certification "OK compost" and the U.S. recycling certification "UL 2485."
Since its launch, GreenShield has been used for popcorn cups at Lotte Cinema and Small Theaters, for Korean Air Lines in-flight meal containers, and for drink cups at OURHOME and NongHyup Mall. It has since expanded to SomiSomi ice cream containers, Crown Confectionery round containers, BHC Chicken, and NoodleLovers trays, widening its use as an eco-friendly packaging solution.
Most recently, it was also applied to VeraPack, a next-generation eco-friendly packaging solution co-developed through collaboration between Hankuk Package and Yido Package.
VeraPack, a new-concept carton pack that combines a differentiated package structure with Hankuk Paper's eco-friendly material, was unveiled at the "2026 Seoul Coffee Expo," held at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul, from the 15th to the 18th. Hankuk Paper believes GreenShield has sufficient competitiveness in the food and beverage packaging market, which demands both eco-friendliness and practicality.
Kang Jun-seok, CEO of Hankuk Paper, said, "GreenShield is an eco-friendly paper packaging with recyclability and biodegradability that can be applied to various fields, including food and beverage packaging," adding, "We will continue to propose eco-friendly packaging solutions that customers can use in actual products."
