POSCO Group Chairman Chang In-hwa said, "For the steel industry to achieve a successful decarbonization transition and for low-carbon steel to be recognized for its fair value in the market, close cooperation and solidarity across the global steel sector are essential."
Chang said this at the regular executive committee meeting of the World Steel Association (Worldsteel) held in Berlin, Germany, on the 13th (local time). Chang attended the event representing Korea's steel industry.
Emphasizing that decarbonization remains a task the industry must tackle together despite sluggish demand and rising energy expense, Chang shared POSCO's decarbonization roadmap.
The executive committee is the World Steel Association's highest decision-making body. Chief executive officers (CEOs) from global steelmakers, including China's Baowu Steel, Nippon Steel of Japan, and India's JSW, attended the meeting.
Through the meeting, they held in-depth discussions on mid- to long-term core tasks, including responses to the energy crisis, the industry impact of geopolitical risks, and international standardization of carbon emission measurement methods.
After the meeting, Chang held a series of meetings and exchanged views on key pending issues with JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal and China Baosteel Group Director Liu Jian, among others.
POSCO also received a plaque recognizing its selection as a top sustainability member at a member companies meeting held alongside the event. The recognition is conferred by the World Steel Association to corporations that lead the steel industry's sustainable development.
POSCO has been selected as a top sustainability member for five consecutive years since 2022. The World Steel Association has 157 member companies, including steelmakers worldwide as well as regional steel associations and research institutions.
