SP Samwha is speeding up its business restructuring as it begins mass production of epoxy molding compound (EMC), a key material for semiconductor packaging.

SP Samwha said on the 14th that it has started mass production of EMC products optimized for high-performance, high-reliability semiconductor packages and begun supplying them to global corporations. The company's strategy is to use this as a springboard to move beyond its traditional paint-centered business and leap forward as a high value-added advanced materials company.

This achievement comes seven years after it began EMC research and development in 2018. SP Samwha succeeded in commercializing the technology four years after building dedicated, self-designed mass production facilities at its Ansan plant.

In 2020, it secured a technological base by receiving a transfer of original epoxy resin manufacturing technology from the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), and in 2022 it succeeded in developing tablet-type EMC. In 2025, it obtained a patent for a "hybrid organic-inorganic composite for semiconductor packaging" that maximizes thermal conductivity while maintaining electrical insulation, building technological competitiveness.

EMC is an essential material that protects semiconductor chips from external environments such as heat, moisture and shock. Because the technical barriers to entry are high, a small number of global materials corporations have long dominated the market. SP Samwha entered the semiconductor materials field based on compounding and synthesis technologies accumulated in its existing coatings business and succeeded in meeting stringent quality standards.

SP Samwha currently has a total of five EMC product lines. Of these, three have already entered mass production, and the remaining two have secured mass-production-level quality. Products developed last year were applied to the latest flagship devices, and new products developed this year are slated to be installed in next-generation devices scheduled for release in the second half.

An SP Samwha official said, "Seven years after starting as a paint manufacturer and taking on the semiconductor materials market, we have achieved meaningful results," adding, "With this mass production success, we will diversify our business portfolio and leap forward as a global integrated chemical company."
