Genesis, the premium brand of Hyundai Motor, has surpassed 1 million in cumulative domestic sales.
Genesis said on the 14th that its cumulative sales as of the end of last month stood at 1,002,998 vehicles. It has been 10 years and 4 months since the brand launched.
In Dec. 2015, Genesis entered the domestic luxury car market by releasing the flagship full-size sedan EQ900 as the first model of the independent brand.
In 2016, the year after the launch, it added the midsize sedan G80 to the lineup and sold 44,271 units in the domestic market.
It then introduced the compact sports sedan G70 in 2017 and the G90, the successor to the EQ900, in 2018, completing a full sedan lineup. Based on this, it continued steady growth, recording average annual sales of more than 50,000 units through 2019.
In Jan. 2020, starting with the brand's first sport utility vehicle (SUV) GV80, it went on to unveil the third-generation G80 in March and the GV70 in December. As a result, it sold 108,384 units in the domestic market, up 90.8% from the previous year, opening the era of 100,000 annual sales for the first time.
In 2021, it successively launched the electrified G80, the GV60, and the electrified GV70, building an electrified lineup and setting a record for the highest-ever domestic sales at 138,757 units. In 2022, it completed a full lineup spanning sedans, SUVs, and electrified models, surpassing 600,000 in cumulative domestic sales. Since 2023 through last year, it maintained average annual sales of more than 120,000 units.
The best-selling model was Genesis's signature sedan, the G80 (including the electrified G80), with 422,589 units sold, accounting for 42.1% of the 1 million total. The GV80 ranked second with 189,485 units (18.9%), followed by the GV70 (including the electrified GV70) with 182,131 units (18.2%) and the G90 with 130,998 units (13.1%). By vehicle type, sedans accounted for 61.8% and SUVs 38.2%.
By region, the domestic market is driving Genesis's overall global sales performance. When Genesis surpassed 1 million in cumulative global sales in Sept. 2023, domestic sales accounted for about 68% (about 690,000 units) of the total, and when it reached 1.5 million cumulative globally in Jan. of this year, about 64% (about 980,000 units) was achieved domestically.
Genesis plans to continue expanding touchpoints with domestic customers through various activities, including opening new hubs, expanding channels for the online shopping mall "Genesis Boutique," and introducing domestically the bespoke vehicle production service "One of One," first unveiled in the Middle East in 2021.
Lee Si-hyuk, executive vice president and head of the Genesis Business Division, said, "Achieving 1 million in cumulative domestic sales for Genesis is a valuable accomplishment created together with domestic customers who have chosen and supported Genesis over the past 10 years," adding, "We will continue to strengthen deep ties with domestic customers and fulfill our role as the luxury brand customers want most."
