An arrest warrant was rejected for a woman in her 20s who set fires twice in one day at Hanyang Women's University in Seongdong District, Seoul.
Seo Beom-jun, the warrant judge at the Seoul Eastern District Court, rejected the arrest warrant on the afternoon of the 1st after holding a pre-arrest suspect questioning (warrant review) for a person surnamed A, who is suspected of arson of an inhabited building, saying there was no risk of flight or evidence destruction.
A is suspected of setting a fire at about 9:17 a.m. on the 30th in a trash can in the women's restroom on basement level 1 of the main building at Hanyang Women's University. The fire sparked a commotion, with 100 people, including faculty and staff, evacuating.
Although the fire authorities extinguished the blaze at about 9:31 a.m., A was found to have set another fire around noon at the faculty hall building. This fire burned out on its own without a separate report.
Responding to a report, police arrested A and applied for an arrest warrant the previous afternoon. A was said to have admitted to the allegations during police questioning.
