S-Oil, which is pushing to transition beyond its refining and petrochemical businesses into a future comprehensive energy corporations, has entered the immersion cooling oil-based thermal management solutions business to meet growing thermal management demand from the spread of artificial intelligence (AI) and the increase in data centers.
According to related industries on the 25th, S-Oil developed a next-generation thermal management solution, e-Cooling Solution, in 2024 that can be applied to heat-intensive environments such as data centers, energy storage systems (ESS), and electric vehicle batteries, and began selling the battery product in Aug. 2025.
The e-Cooling Solution uses an immersion cooling method. Immersion cooling means cooling by submerging electronic components or batteries directly in a highly insulating coolant. The coolant makes direct contact with heat-generating components to rapidly absorb and disperse heat, and it blocks air inflow to fundamentally prevent the spread of fires.
S-Oil secured performance and stability through material compatibility checks, metal corrosion assessments, and long-term operation tests during product development, and it also completed application tests for electric vehicle batteries. In addition, in cooperation with Bumhan Unisolution, a battery packaging specialized corporations, it is pushing to develop immersion-cooled ESS and electric vehicle battery pack systems. Currently, immersion-cooled ESS battery systems using S-Oil's immersion cooling oil are being supplied mainly to public institutions.
S-Oil plans to expand the scope of application from the ESS field, where it has secured commercialization results, to data centers, electric vehicles, and various industrial sectors. In particular, as power consumption and heat generation at data centers surge due to the spread of AI and high-performance computing, the importance of high-efficiency thermal management technologies, including immersion cooling, is increasing further. Accordingly, S-Oil will advance thermal management solutions that simultaneously ensure safety and efficiency with immersion cooling oil at the center, and it plans to continuously expand the next-generation thermal management market through collaboration with various partners.
