LG Energy Solution is expanding its business beyond battery manufacturing into future industries. By moving into a range of new businesses, it aims to build an "energy circulation ecosystem" and respond proactively to the rapidly changing global industrial landscape.
On 2024, LG Energy Solution released at a vision briefing that it would expand its business from hardware into software and services. Following BMS (Battery Management System), which is drawing attention as a core technology for battery safety management, it plans to build a BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) ecosystem and expand into service businesses such as battery leasing, rentals, and recycling.
According to LG Energy Solution on the 25th, tangible results from its new businesses are emerging. A representative example is the Better.Re (battery) solution, a "battery life extension technology" that won a "CES 2026 Innovation Award" in Oct. last year. This is the first time a battery corporations has won a CES Innovation Award for pure software technology. It means its technological prowess is recognized in software as well as hardware.
This solution is a battery life extension technology developed based on ▲ a battery life prediction algorithm independently developed by LG Energy Solution ▲ real-world driving data totaling about 1.2 billion km ▲ various operational information such as charging and parking. It can slow battery degradation and predict abnormalities in advance to improve battery life by up to more than twofold.
LG Energy Solution is currently running B.around, a battery management total solution (BMTS) business brand that is a step forward from conventional BMS. B.around offers a range of solutions, including software such as safety diagnostics and degradation/life prediction combined with cloud and artificial intelligence (AI), and a software-defined vehicle (SDV) platform. Based on BMTS, it operates various BaaS businesses such as B-lifecare, a continuous battery diagnostic service, and B.once, a one-time battery evaluation service.
In step with the AI era, it is also expanding battery supply channels. In Nov. last year, LG Energy Solution signed an MOU with the mobility platform corporations Bear Robotics, which is based on autonomous driving robots, for a battery cell supply contract and technological cooperation. With this supply contract and cooperation as a starting point, it plans to secure an early lead in the global robot market, which is expected to grow rapidly.
ESS is also a segment expected to grow as data centers expand with the spread of AI and big data. Over the past year, LG Energy Solution has won numerous ESS-related projects, mainly in North America and Europe. It has secured a string of large orders in North America and Europe. It is focusing on gaining an early lead in the ESS market for a variety of uses, from dwellings to large-scale power grids.
An LG Energy Solution official said, "By expanding our services and software business leveraging AI capabilities amid the EV chasm and strengthening our new-business portfolio, we will build a solid business structure that does not depend on the EV market and create new growth opportunities."
