Kia said on the 10th that it has released the facelifted model of its small sport-utility vehicle (SUV), the Niro, called "the new Niro." The model secures fuel efficiency of about 20 km per liter (L), and it is the first time in four years that Kia has launched a new Niro.
The Niro is Kia's representative small SUV, recording cumulative global sales of 1.2 million units since the first-generation model was released in March 2016. This facelifted model enhances product competitiveness by applying the latest safety and convenience features to the second-generation model released in January 2022.
The new Niro is equipped with a 1.6 hybrid powertrain. It delivers a system maximum output of 141 horsepower and maximum torque of 27.0 kgf·m. In particular, maximum combined fuel economy is 20.2 km/L (with 16-inch wheels). This is the highest among domestic hybrid SUVs. Considering that the second-generation model achieved 20.8 km/L, it has decreased slightly because curb weight has increased.
The new Niro newly applies specialized features such as the smart regenerative braking system, the hybrid layered predictive control system, and stay mode. The smart regenerative braking system automatically adjusts the level of regenerative braking, and the hybrid layered predictive control system optimally manages battery charge to help improve fuel economy.
It also improves ride comfort through front and rear suspension tuning, and strengthens quietness by increasing the density of the dash sound-absorbing pad to reduce engine noise intrusion into the cabin. The number of airbags increases to 10 by adding two second-row side airbags, and pretensioners for seat belts in all seats are applied. Forward and rear collision-avoidance assist technologies and a surround view monitor also help ensure safe driving.
In addition, the "Kia Connect Store," where various display themes and streaming premium services can be purchased and subscribed to, and the natural language-based voice recognition service "Kia AI Assistant" are applied.
The exterior reflects the Kia brand design philosophy "Opposites United." Daytime running lights with "Star Map signature lighting," which emphasize horizontal and vertical lines, are applied, and the precisely composed front bumper and lower grille add a solid presence.
The new Niro measures 4,430 mm in length, 1,825 mm in width, and 1,545 mm in height. The wheelbase is 2,720 mm. The length has increased by 10 mm compared with the previous model. A horizontal layout and the next-generation infotainment system (ccNC) add practicality to the sense of openness.
Starting prices for the new Niro by trim are ▲ Trendy 28.85 million won ▲ Prestige 31.95 million won ▲ Signature 34.64 million won.
