Samhwa Paint said on the 6th that it has completed development of a high-performance MMB (Melt Master Batch), a key material for next-generation semiconductor packaging, with Samsung SDI, and has begun mass production and supply.
Samhwa Paint and Samsung SDI jointly developed the high-performance MMB through continuous research and development (R&D). It is the result of about a year of collaboration after the two companies agreed in April last year to jointly develop an EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound) formulation, an epoxy encapsulant for semiconductor packaging.
The MMB produced by Samhwa Paint is supplied to Samsung SDI and applied to the packaging process of the application processor (AP), a core component of newly released mobile devices. Samhwa Paint expects to expand the scope of application beyond mobile devices to DRAM for AI servers and NAND memory packaging.
As the AI industry has grown rapidly in recent years, semiconductor technology has also advanced. To achieve high-performance semiconductors, circuit miniaturization and high integration that stacks chips in multiple layers are essential. However, such structures can lead to issues such as increased heat generation, reduced durability, and higher power consumption. The industry cites EMC as one of the key materials to control these problems.
The MMB developed by Samhwa Paint and Samsung SDI is a semi-finished product for manufacturing EMC and plays a critical role in ensuring uniform quality of the final material. The two companies applied a pre-reaction technology that directly synthesizes special resins and additives, significantly enhancing chemical stability and component uniformity. It is a core technology that surpasses the conventional dry blend method, which simply mixes raw materials. This prevents semiconductor "warpage" and improves moisture resistance and heat dissipation performance.
Samhwa Paint also made facility investments to stably produce high-purity MMB. To establish a stringent foreign-substance control system required in semiconductor processes, the company introduced dedicated reaction equipment, grinders, and filters, completing its proprietary high-purity MMB manufacturing system.
A Samhwa Paint official said, "This MMB development is a meaningful achievement that proves the technological prowess of domestic corporations in a semiconductor materials market long led by global companies," adding, "We will further strengthen our electronic materials business, including secondary batteries, and leap beyond paint manufacturing to become a global comprehensive chemical company."
