LG Chem said on the 5th that it will participate in InterBattery 2026, held for three days at COEX in Seoul starting on the 11th, and unveil an integrated solution that delays and blocks thermal runaway.
With the spread of electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESS), battery safety is emerging as a key factor that determines market trust beyond technological competitiveness.
An LG Chem official said, "In particular, as regulations on thermal propagation by global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are strengthened, technology to respond to battery thermal runaway is becoming an essential condition in battery design."
The thermal runaway delay engineering plastic introduced this time (SFB, Super Flame Barrier) turns into a hard, dense barrier when exposed to flame, simultaneously slowing the transfer of flame and pressure. It is light and highly workable, allowing flexible battery pack design.
LG Chem will also exhibit the aerogel-based thermal blocking material "Nexula." Aerogel, which has thermal blocking properties, effectively blocks heat spread not only between cells but also between modules and inside battery packs.
LG Chem combined two materials—thermal runaway delay material and aerogel—to implement a dual safety system that "delays and blocks" heat. It will also showcase various adhesive solutions, including a thermal interface adhesive that quickly dissipates heat while securely fixing cells, a structural adhesive that firmly bonds dissimilar materials such as metal and plastic to enhance the reliability of the battery system, and a potting agent that protects batteries from external impact, moisture, and ignition.
LG Chem plans to exhibit advanced material solutions applied across future industries beyond electric vehicles to humanoids and urban air mobility (UAM). Through a portfolio that spans the entire battery value chain, it aims to present integrated material competitiveness that satisfies performance, safety, and sustainability.
