HJ Shipbuilding & Construction said on the 11th it signed a construction contract with a European shipowner for two 11,100-TEU (1 TEU = one 20-foot container) eco-friendly container ships worth a total of 353.2 billion won, with options for two additional vessels. It is the first time in the 90-year history of the HJ Shipbuilding & Construction Yeongdo Shipyard that a container ship of 10,000 TEU or larger will be built.
The vessels ordered this time are 11,100-TEU eco-friendly container carriers that minimize greenhouse gas emissions with the latest hull form and high fuel efficiency favored recently by the shipping industry. A scrubber, a desulfurization device, will be installed to meet International Maritime Organization (IMO) environmental regulations, and a high-efficiency hull design enabling optimal operations will be applied.
HJ Shipbuilding & Construction successfully built and delivered a 9,000-TEU methanol container ship last year. HJ Shipbuilding & Construction said this contract is a re-order by a shipowner that recently ordered and received a container ship and, satisfied with the quality, placed another order.
