HJ Shipbuilding & Construction said on the 10th that it has subcontracted to Daesun Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. the fabrication of accommodation (crew living area) blocks for eight eco-friendly container ships of 7,900 TEU (1 TEU = one 20-foot container) class ordered by a European shipowner, and that production is underway.
A ship's accommodation is a superstructure that houses the ship's wheelhouse, navigation equipment, cabins and offices, and amenities, and is one of the vessel's core components. The accommodation this time is on the scale of a 10-story building.
HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has been producing accommodations in-house, but as its Yeongdo shipyard reached full capacity following construction of eco-friendly merchant ships and special-purpose vessels such as warships, and the award of a U.S. Navy MRO project, it has pursued a subcontract with Daesun Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. to enhance production flexibility.
Of the total eight accommodations HJ Shipbuilding & Construction ordered last year, the first block held a lighting ceremony that also served as a review session last month and was delivered. A lighting ceremony is a process to check whether major systems and equipment in the accommodation operate as designed.
An HJ Shipbuilding & Construction official said, "With the outside fabrication of this accommodation, we expect not only increased sales for both companies and a virtuous cycle in the shipbuilding ecosystem but also various regional economic revitalization effects," and added, "Going forward, we will maximize win-win cooperation synergies by expanding collaboration that leverages the intra-regional supply chain."
