HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun met with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss ways to expand mutual cooperation in the shipbuilding sector.
HD Hyundai said on the 29th that Chairman Chung and Kim Hyung-kwan, CEO of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, attended the "Global Energy Leaders Roundtable" held at the prime minister's residence in New Delhi, India, on the 28th at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi.
The Global Energy Leaders Roundtable, part of "India Energy Week 2026," brought together about 30 participants, including Prime Minister Modi, Ministers from relevant Indian ministries and heads of state-owned corporations, and CEOs of global corporations.
At the event, Chairman Chung expressed gratitude for Prime Minister Modi's resolve and efforts to foster the shipbuilding industry and asked for continued interest and support for the cooperation projects HD Hyundai is pursuing with India.
"HD Hyundai is maintaining close cooperative ties with India across various fields," Chung said. "India is central to our strategy to diversify overseas production bases, and we are confident it will become a new growth engine for HD Hyundai."
To participate in the Indian government's strategically promoted "Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047" program, HD Hyundai signed an MOU with Cochin Shipyard Limited, India's largest state-owned shipbuilder, in Jul. last year and agreed to cooperate in various areas, including design and procurement support and productivity improvement.
Recently, it expanded the scope of cooperation with Cochin Shipyard Limited to include naval vessels and signed an "exclusive agreement for joint shipyard construction" with the state government of Tamil Nadu, India.
In India as well, in Nov. last year and Jan. this year, Minister Hardeep Singh Puri of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister Rajah of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI) of Tamil Nadu visited Korea to tour the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center and the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Ulsan Shipyard, seeking to strengthen cooperation.
