HYBE said on the 9th that it appointed Ethiopia Habtemariam, former Motown Records chair, as head of the music institutional sector at HYBE America.
Habtemariam will oversee A&R (artists and repertoire) and artist development across labels under HYBE America and will lead the establishment and execution of mid- to long-term growth strategies. Based on the nexus of music, culture, and fandom, Habtemariam will seek new business opportunities and focus on strengthening the stature and influence of QC Media Holdings, HYBE America's hip-hop label.
Habtemariam is a veteran music industry executive who worked at Universal Music Group (UMG) for about 20 years. Serving as chair and CEO at Motown Records, Habtemariam led Motown's revival and growth and helped bolster the global competitiveness of artists and labels. Since the 1960s, Motown Records has launched artists such as Stevie Wonder, the Jackson 5, and Marvin Gaye, ushering in the golden age of soul and R&B.
While at Motown, Habtemariam led collaboration between Motown and QC, expanding the global market footprint of artists including Lil Yachty, City Girls, Migos, and Lil Baby. Before joining Motown, Habtemariam served as an executive at Universal Music Publishing and Capitol Music Group under UMG. At Universal Music Publishing, Habtemariam played a key role in signing and supporting the growth of top artists such as Chris Brown, J. Cole, Justin Bieber, and Ciara.
Habtemariam said, "I have long resonated with how HYBE America views the future of artists, fans, and entertainment," adding, "It is meaningful to contribute my experience to HYBE America's next phase, which pursues long-term growth based on cultural 'connections.'"
