HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said on the 7th that it recently won a contract for the regular overhaul of the USNS Cesar Chavez, a 41,000-ton-class dry cargo and ammunition ship with the U.S. 7th Fleet. The overhaul will be carried out at a quay near the Ulsan Medium Ship Business Unit and delivered to the U.S. Navy in March.
Commissioned in 2012, the Cesar Chavez is 210 meters long, 32 meters wide, and 9.4 meters high, and will undergo precision maintenance on more than 100 items, including the hull and structures, propulsion, electrical, and outfitting systems. The initial contract called for about 60 maintenance items, but more than 100 additional items were identified during the work, increasing the maintenance period and contract amount.
An earlier MRO project first won by the company was also completed successfully. The MRO work on the U.S. Navy's fleet replenishment oiler Alan Shepard, awarded in Aug. last year, was successfully completed at the end of last year, and the ship departed on the 6th. For the Alan Shepard, the initial contract requested work on about 60 items, but more than 100 additional items were identified during the work, extending the maintenance period and increasing the contract amount.

A U.S. Navy official said, "We are very satisfied to receive the Alan Shepard, newly delivered as a ship of outstanding quality on time," and noted, "Based on MRO performed around the world, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is the best partner."
