Hanwha Aerospace (Hanwha Aero) signed a contract worth 5.6 trillion won to supply guided missiles for the Chunmoo, a multiple launch guided weapon, to Poland. It is the third contract following 2022 and 2024, bringing Hanwha Aerospace's total Chunmoo-related exports to Poland to 13 trillion won.
At the signing ceremony held on the 29th (local time) at the Military Museum in Warsaw, Poland, Armament Agency Director Artur Kuptel, WB Group Chairman Piotr Wojciech, and Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il signed the agreement.
Also in attendance were Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik; Office of National Security First Deputy Director Kim Hyun-jong; Defense Acquisition Program Administration Commissioner Lee Yong-chul; Ministry of National Defense Resource Management Director Won Jong-dae; Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz; and Poland's Vice Minister of the Ministry of National Defense Paweł Bejda, among other key officials from both countries.
Kang said, "The third Chunmoo contract goes beyond a simple model of manufacturing weapons in Korea and exporting them to Poland; it is a model in which the two countries establish a joint venture in Poland, build a factory, and produce together," adding, "As bilateral cooperation in politics, economy, and security has continued to advance, defense industry cooperation has also entered a higher stage."
Kang added, "I hope a virtuous cycle will firmly take root, in which trust built in security extends to industry, and industrial cooperation expands again into cooperation between future generations," and said, "We will be the strongest partner that does not waver in the face of any challenge."
As Kang noted, this is the third contract. Hanwha Aerospace previously signed a basic agreement with the Polish government in 2022 for the export of Chunmoo launchers and guided missiles. It then signed a first execution contract worth about 5 trillion won in Nov. of the same year and a second execution contract worth about 2 trillion won in 2024, supplying Chunmoo launchers and guided missiles to Poland. Including this third contract, the total supply amounts to 12.6 trillion won.
This third execution contract is an achievement made as the "European defense industry bloc" has deepened, with the European Union (EU) creating the Secure Action for Europe fund to encourage priority purchases of European-made weapons. Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il said, "We extend our deep gratitude for the full support and efforts at the national level," and added, "We will work to ensure that K-defense can also contribute to strengthening Korea's security."
