Chey Jae-won, the executive vice chairman of SK Innovation and the younger brother of Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, is moving to SK Square. He is said to be planning to take charge of investment and strategy in the group's core businesses, including artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors.
According to a business community source on the 29th, the executive vice chairman Chey will move to SK Square as executive vice chairman effective Jan. 1 next year. He is expected to lead SK Square's management together with President Kim Jeong-gyu, who was appointed president of SK Square in the executive reshuffle at SK Group in Nov.
SK Square is an investment specialist company established in a spin-off from SK Telecom in 2021 and is currently the largest shareholder of SK hynix. The company is driving growth of its subsidiaries, including SK hynix, through global investments focused on AI and semiconductors.
The executive vice chairman Chey majored in physics at Brown University, earned a master's in materials science at Stanford University, and completed an MBA at Harvard University. After joining SKC in 1994, Chey worked at SK Telecom, SK E&S (now SK Innovation E&S), SK Inc., and SK Networks, and has served as executive vice chairman of SK Innovation since June last year.
A business community source said, "Vice Chairman Chey has worked at several subsidiaries based on a broad global network and has mainly demonstrated his capabilities in new growth strategy and investment," adding, "At SK Square, Chey will also focus on new investments in promising industries such as AI and semiconductors and on improving the portfolio."
