At about 3:09 p.m. on the 22nd, a man in his 50s, identified as A, fell from a height of 21 meters while preparing to paint a crude oil tanker at Samsung Heavy Industries' Geoje Shipyard in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province.
A was taken to a hospital immediately but died.
A was confirmed to be an employee of a Samsung Heavy Industries subcontractor. He was reportedly wearing a safety helmet and other gear at the time of the accident.
The company issued a complete work stoppage order for the vessel immediately after the accident. Samsung Heavy Industries said it plans to conduct special safety training for all employees.
An official at the Tongyeong branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) said, "It appears that at the time of the accident, A was moving a hose as part of a two-person team to prepare for painting when the accident occurred," adding, "We are investigating the details of the accident, including whether there was a violation of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act."
