SK Rent-a-Car said on the 15th that in the first year of its "external emissions trading scheme project using electric vehicles," it was certified for a net reduction of 1,921 t (tons) CO₂-eq (carbon dioxide equivalent).
The external project under the emissions trading scheme is designed to allow corporations that are not subject to greenhouse gas emission regulations to have their voluntary reduction activities recognized, and the secured reduction performance is converted into offset credits and traded in the emissions market.
SK Rent-a-Car and SK Telecom received approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) in April and have since carried out the project, and this month they also passed the final review of the Emissions Certification Committee of the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment. An SK Rent-a-Car official said, "It is the largest case in Korea and the first in the industry to verify reduction effects based on real-world driving data from passenger electric vehicles," adding, "It is meaningful in that the effectiveness of the project has been officially recognized."
Twelve electric vehicle models were included in this verification, including the GV60, EV6, EV9, Ioniq 5·6, and Tesla Model 3·Model Y. SK Rent-a-Car collected real-time driving data such as mileage, battery usage, and charging history through "Smart Link," the company's independently developed vehicle management solution.
The verification found that, for the same driving distance, the estimated annual emissions of internal combustion engine vehicles were 12,477 t, while the actual emissions of electric vehicles were calculated at 10,178 t. Of the total reduction of 2,299 t, 1,921 t was recognized as the net reduction, reflecting verification policy standards. This is the largest one-year reduction among external projects using electric vehicles in Korea. Of the reductions, 81.6% will go to SK Rent-a-Car and the remaining 18.4% to SK Telecom.
An SK Rent-a-Car official said, "Based on this achievement, we will continue to push for the external project under the emissions trading scheme to become a model case for Korea's transition to eco-friendly mobility, and we plan to respond to the government's eco-friendly policies as well."
