Volvo Cars' next-generation pure electric SUV EX60 will be equipped with the Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt, which was selected by U.S. news magazine Time as one of the Best Inventions of 2025.
Time annually selects innovative technologies and products that change the way people live and announces them as the year's best inventions. This year it selected 300 inventions across various fields, and Volvo Cars achieved the result of being selected for two consecutive years, following last year's Driver Understanding System and this year's Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt.
Volvo's next-generation safety technology, the Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt, operates in real time according to occupants' physical conditions and driving situations and is characterized by providing optimized protection customized for each individual occupant.
The system finely adjusts protection strength based on an occupant's height, weight, body shape and seating posture using data collected from advanced sensors inside and outside the vehicle. For example, in a high-impact crash, the belt load is set higher for a large occupant to reduce the risk of head injury, while for a smaller occupant the load is automatically reduced to lower the risk of rib fractures.
In addition, the multi-adaptive safety belt is designed to allow continuous feature improvements through over-the-air (OTA) wireless software updates. Volvo Cars plans to continuously evolve the system's algorithms based on real-world driving data to enhance its protective capabilities in various situations.
Åsa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars' Safety Center, said she is proud that Volvo Cars is recognized as a leading brand in automotive safety, and said the multi-adaptive safety belt, to be first applied in Volvo's next-generation electric SUV, the EX60, will use the vehicle's real-time data to provide smart protection tailored to occupants and situations, helping to reduce the risk of injury.
