POSCO FUTURE M will work with Factorial Inc on Solid-state Battery technology development.
POSCO FUTURE M said on the 4th that it signed a strategic cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU) for Solid-state Battery technology development with U.S. Solid-state Battery corporations Factorial Energy at the Future Battery Forum in Berlin, Germany, on the 25th (local time) of last month.
A Solid-state Battery uses a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid between the battery's cathode and anode. Compared with existing batteries, it is safer and offers superior energy density and charging performance, making it a next-generation battery drawing attention as a "game changer" for next-generation mobility industries such as electric vehicles and robots.
Factorial Energy is a Solid-state Battery corporations headquartered in Massachusetts. The company has partnered with global automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Hyundai and Kia and is accelerating Solid-state Battery development. In Korea, it operates a Solid-state Battery pilot plant in Cheonan, South Chungcheong.
POSCO FUTURE M plans to further strengthen its competitiveness in the Solid-state Battery materials business through this agreement. POSCO FUTURE M is pushing research and development of cathode materials and silicon anode materials for Solid-state Batteries.
POSCO FUTURE M said, "Factorial Energy received cathode material samples for Solid-state Batteries from several battery materials companies and ran tests, and concluded that POSCO FUTURE M's quality competitiveness was superior to other materials companies, leading to the signing of the MOU."
Hong Young-jun, head of the technology research center at POSCO FUTURE M, said, "Based on Factorial Energy's battery technology and market development with global automakers, and POSCO FUTURE M's competitiveness in cathode and anode materials, we expect synergy in the next-generation Solid-state Battery business."
Siu Huang, CEO of Factorial Energy, said, "Solid-state Batteries are entering a new phase for commercial production," adding, "Cooperation with POSCO FUTURE M will not only accelerate innovation in the key materials of cathode and anode, but also strengthen the global supply chain and contribute to expense reductions."
