Last month in the United States, Hyundai Motor Group's hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) sales hit an all-time high. Despite a sharp drop in electric vehicle sales due to the end of the U.S. government's EV tax credit, demand for HEVs increased.
Hyundai Motor and Kia said on the 3rd that U.S. HEV sales in November were 36,172 units, up 49% from a year earlier. Hyundai Motor sold 20,377 units and Kia sold 15,795 units, up 37% and 67%, respectively. These figures are a monthly record high. By model, Elantra HEV (96%), Niro HEV (286%), and Sportage HEV (71%) posted increases.
Hyundai Motor Group's U.S. electric vehicle sales in November were 4,618 units, a sharp drop of 58.9% from a year earlier, but overall eco-friendly vehicle sales increased thanks to strong HEV performance. Hyundai Motor Group sold a total of 40,790 eco-friendly vehicles in the U.S. in November, up 14.8% year over year. Eco-friendly vehicles also rose to 26.4% of total sales.
Hyundai Motor Group's overall sales also edged up. Combined U.S. sales of Hyundai Motor (including Genesis) and Kia were 154,308 units, up 0.1% from a year earlier. Hyundai Motor sold 82,306 units, down 2%, while Kia sold 72,002 units, up 2.7%. Genesis came to 8,017 units, up 0.2%.
By model, Hyundai Motor's best-sellers were the Tucson (23,762 units), Santa Fe (14,004), and Avante (10,389), while Kia's were the Sportage (15,795), K4 (10,054), and Telluride (9,321) in that order.
