Hyundai Steel said on the 1st it will unveil a model of an electric arc furnace steel mill planned for construction in Louisiana, U.S., at the World Hydrogen Expo 2025 (WHE).
This will be the first time Hyundai Steel unveils a model of an electric arc furnace it plans to build in the United States. The expo will be held from the 4th to the 7th at Kintex in Ilsan, Goyang, Gyeonggi.
Hyundai Steel plans to present the concrete design of the electric arc furnace steel mill slated for commercial production in 2029 and the mid- to long-term technology roadmap toward hydrogen-reduced steelmaking.
The steel mill model allows viewers to grasp at a glance the main processes and infrastructure of the mill, including the DRP (Direct Reduction Plant), a raw material production facility that produces direct reduced iron (DRI), the electric arc furnace, and hot-rolling and cold-rolling facilities.
In addition, the exhibition video is designed to show the introduction of a direct reduction process that uses natural gas as a reducing agent (a substance that reduces another substance in a chemical reaction and is itself oxidized).
Through the video, Hyundai Steel also included the mid- to long-term transition process that raises the share of hydrogen use to ultimately realize hydrogen-reduced steelmaking, helping intuitive understanding of the carbon reduction process.
At the expo, Hyundai Steel made it possible to see at a glance its future core process technologies under research and development and equipment roadmap, its mid- to long-term vision for achieving net-zero, and even the future value it aims to realize through them.
A Hyundai Steel official said, "Through this expo, we will promote Hyundai Steel's future vision and technological prowess on the global stage and actively demonstrate our role in contributing to the carbon-neutral strategy as a member of Hyundai Motor Group."
