Samsung Heavy Industries joined hands with Korea institute of Materials Science (KIMS) to establish a joint research center to secure materials technology in the shipbuilding and offshore sectors.

Samsung Heavy Industries said on the 28th that it held a plaque unveiling ceremony for the "KIMS-SHI Materials Innovation Research Center" at Korea institute of Materials Science (KIMS) in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, and will begin joint research in earnest.

The establishment of the research center is a follow-up to a business agreement the two institutions signed in Feb., aimed at ramping up cooperation in materials that will determine the future technological competitiveness of the shipbuilding and offshore industries.

Samsung Heavy Industries will identify technologies needed on production sites, present a roadmap, and carry out demonstrations.

KIMS will be responsible for base technology development and reliability evaluation.

Samsung Heavy Industries and KIMS plan to concentrate their capabilities at the research center on KC-2C LNG cargo containment system materials, ultra-cryogenic materials and application technologies, and materials development for molten salt reactors (MSR).

A Samsung Heavy Industries official said, "The research center is expected to play a key role in achieving self-reliance in materials technology for future eco-friendly ships such as liquefied hydrogen carriers," and added, "We will organically link core infrastructure and professionals to foster the center as a hub for the development of shipbuilding and offshore materials technology."
