Hyundai Motor Group has established a control tower to respond to cyber threats.
According to Hyundai Motor's quarterly report on the 18th, Hyundai Motor Group recently created a new Group Cyber Threat Response Team to prevent and respond to cyberattacks such as hacking and ransomware. The Head of Team is Yang Gi-chang, head of the integrated security center (senior vice president).
This is the first time a separate organization has been created at the Hyundai Motor Group level to respond to cyberattacks. Previously, affiliates responded to cyberattacks on their own. The Group Cyber Threat Response Team will inspect and analyze threat factors within the group and carry out tasks such as situation monitoring and process improvement.
In addition, Hyundai Motor and Kia have significantly increased information security investment over the past three years to respond to cyber threats. According to the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), this year Hyundai Motor and Kia's information security investment totaled 62.14 billion won. That is up 46.1% from last year's 42.53 billion won.
Dedicated information security personnel also increased. Hyundai Motor and Kia's dedicated personnel stood at 262.6, up by about 77 from 185.4 last year.
There is analysis that Hyundai Motor Group's push to strengthen cyber security aims to bolster security for connected cars (Connected Car, vehicles connected to the internet). As vehicles are connected to external networks, the move is seen as intended to block risks of vehicle control being hijacked or personal information being leaked.
