Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) will team up with Samsung Electronics to develop defense artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors.
KAI said on the 14th that it signed a mutual cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Samsung Electronics at KAI's headquarters in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang, for "AI and defense semiconductor development and production for application in the aerospace and defense industries."
Through this agreement, KAI and Samsung Electronics will push joint research and development that reflects the particularities of the defense sector and work together on tasks such as establishing a technology roadmap to apply commercial semiconductor technology to defense semiconductors.
In particular, by operating working groups and consultative bodies, conducting joint research and development, and securing a stable supply chain, they plan to develop defense AI semiconductors tailored to the aerospace and defense industries and raise the localization rate of semiconductors for weapons systems.
Cha Jae-byeong, acting CEO of KAI, said, "Strategic cooperation between KAI, which has developed various domestically produced aircraft platforms, and Samsung Electronics, a global leading semiconductor company, will be key to developing AI Semiconductor in the defense sector."
Han Jin-man, president of the foundry business at Samsung Electronics, said, "Samsung Electronics will provide integrated technology across all stages from design to process to mass production, based on differentiated process capabilities and an ecosystem, to enhance domestic AI competitiveness."
