Dongkuk Steel Mill apologized and promised to put in place measures to prevent a recurrence in connection with an accident at its Pohang plant that left one subcontracted worker dead.
Chief Executive Choi Sam-yeong of Dongkuk Steel Mill on the 23rd said, "We pray for the repose of the deceased who suffered an unexpected accident at the Pohang plant, and we offer our deepest condolences and apologies to the bereaved family."
Choi also said, "To ensure such a tragic accident is never repeated, we are actively cooperating with investigative authorities in identifying the cause of the accident and determining responsibility, and we are closely reviewing items that require our own improvements." Choi added, "To prevent the same accident from recurring in the future, we will inspect all related systems and worksites to establish fundamental measures to prevent a recurrence," and said, "With sincerity, we will do everything necessary so that the bereaved family can overcome their grief and get back on their feet."
At about 1:40 p.m. on the 22nd, a subcontracted worker in his 40s working at Dongkuk Steel Mill's Pohang plant was crushed and killed by a reversing trailer. Police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor are investigating the circumstances of the accident and whether there were violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
