As Renault Korea unveiled the 2026 model of the midsize sport utility vehicle (SUV) Grand Koleos, the four-wheel-drive (4WD) version is drawing consumer attention.
The 4WD version comes with U.S. auto parts company BorgWarner's sixth-generation 4WD system and intelligent control technology. Depending on driving conditions, it automatically distributes front and rear drive power up to 50:50. In normal situations, it prioritizes the front wheels for efficiency, while in mud or on snowy roads, it intelligently allocates torque to each wheel to secure traction. The paired eight-speed automatic transmission is designed to enhance both low-speed climbing performance and high-speed cruising efficiency.
The lineup of drive modes also stands out. The two-wheel-drive (2WD) version offers five modes—Eco, Comfort, Sport, Snow, and artificial intelligence (AI)—while the 4WD version adds an off-road mode. In off-road mode, the transmission uses up to third gear only, and when the speed exceeds 40 kph, it automatically switches to the normal pattern.
The hardware that supports the driving feel has also been strengthened. The MFB (Multi-Function Body) valve shock absorbers control suspension compression speed to reduce impacts on uneven surfaces. With a valve structure 30% larger than before and finely tuned damping force adjustment, it adapts to a variety of road conditions. The 211 mm ground clearance and improved approach and departure angles also provide stability on campground access roads, forest trails, and winter snow routes.
The special edition Espacarde, launched with the model-year update, targets an outdoor lifestyle. The roof box version offers ample cargo space for camping and leisure activities, while the panoramic sunroof version emphasizes openness.
A Renault Korea official said, "The Grand Koleos 4WD is evolving beyond the category of a simple city SUV to simultaneously satisfy performance and driving feel in real outdoor environments," adding, "Alongside the hybrid model, a key point to watch is whether this 4WD lineup can establish itself as another pillar within the product range."
