A week after about 300 Korean employees detained on suspicion of illegal stay at the construction site of the joint plant of Hyundai Motor and LG Energy Solution returned to Korea, the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) will hold a seminar to address questions on visa issues faced by Korean corporations entering the United States.
AMCHAM is the largest foreign economic organization in Korea, founded in 1953. It works to promote investment and trade between Korea and the United States and has more than 800 member companies at home and abroad.
According to the business community on the 12th, AMCHAM will hold a "U.S. Visa Seminar" at 1:30 p.m. on the 29th at the International Finance Centre (IFC) in Yeouido.
The event was organized at the request of Korean corporations as cases of visa denials for employees of Korean corporations that recently entered the United States have increased.
At the event, AMCHAM will present the overall U.S. work visa guidelines that apply to corporations and individuals. It also plans to provide information on eligibility requirements by visa type and the scope of business activities permitted by category. Earlier, in Aug. last year, AMCHAM, together with the Consulate General in Houston and the U.S. Embassy's Customs and Border Protection (CBP), held a briefing on U.S. work visa issuance procedures.
Interest in the seminar within the business community has grown due to the recent detentions.
The event will begin with opening remarks by James Kim, AMCHAM chairman and chief executive officer (CEO). Lawyer Jeong Man-seok of Immigration Law Firm Daeyang will deliver a keynote speech on the theme of "visa strategies in the new U.S. administration era."
Former U.S. Representative Kwanza Hall (now chair of the Fulton County Development Authority) and Lee Jong-geun, CEO of HANYANG ENG, will attend and lead a panel discussion. HANYANG ENG is a semiconductor equipment corporation and a major partner of Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.
An AMCHAM official said, "As U.S. immigration policy has tightened, choosing the right visa has become more important than ever," and added, "Korean corporations must prepare thoroughly and choose the appropriate visa type for successful market entry."
