Labor unions at HD Hyundai Group's three shipbuilders went on a joint strike again on the 10th.
The HD Hyundai Heavy Industries union (Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) Metalworkers' Union HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Branch) held a seven-hour partial strike from 9 a.m. that day. The HD Hyundai Mipo union and HD Hyundai Samho union launched four-hour partial strikes from 1 p.m. that day. This is the second joint strike by the three HD Hyundai Group shipbuilders this year.
Labor and management at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries remain far apart on the method and scale of wage increases. Since the proposal to raise the base salary by 133,000 won was voted down at a general meeting of union members on Jul. 18, there has reportedly been no progress. At HD Hyundai Mipo and HD Hyundai Samho, management has not yet presented a bargaining proposal.
In particular, Baek Ho-seon, head of the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries union branch, climbed a turnover crane about 40 meters high (equipment that flips ship structures) inside the Ulsan shipyard at around 9:45 a.m. that day and began a high-altitude sit-in. Baek declared a general strike, and the union decided to begin an indefinite, all-out strike starting on the 11th.
On the 12th, the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries union plans to join unions from HD Hyundai affiliates and head to the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center (GRC) in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, for a protest in the capital.
