The Mercedes-Benz electric concept AMG GT XX raced for 5,479 kilometers over 24 hours. When the battery drained, it rapidly recharged while maintaining a speed of 300 kilometers per hour for the entire 24 hours.
It is amazing enough that an electric vehicle was able to drive at high speeds all day without losing energy, but it is said that it also traveled 1,518 kilometers more than the previous record. The fact that this kind of test is taking place is also surprising.
On the 1st, Mercedes-Benz announced news of setting a new long-distance driving record for electric vehicles globally.
The "Concept AMG GT XX" is an electric concept car from the high-performance brand "Mercedes-AMG."
Unveiled for the first time globally in June, the Concept AMG GT XX is a vehicle equipped with outstanding technology, top durability, ultra-fast charging, and emotional design, based on pioneering technology that presents a blueprint for future high-performance AMG electric architecture (AMG.EA) based four-door production sports cars.
This test, conducted at a high-speed test track in Nardò, Italy, was planned to prove the exceptional long-distance driving performance of the AMG electric drive train. To achieve this, 17 professional drivers maintained speeds of 300 kilometers per hour, continuously driving on the track, except for driver changes and stops for ultra-fast charging.
As a result, the Concept AMG GT XX achieved the longest record for an electric vehicle, driving 5,479 kilometers in 24 hours. This is a record that exceeds the previous record of less than 4,000 kilometers by an impressive 1,518 kilometers. Additionally, the vehicle successfully traveled 40,075 kilometers, approximately the distance around the Earth, over about 8 days (7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes, and 7 seconds).
The key to the record achievement of the Concept AMG GT XX lies in its innovative drive train. Composed of three axial flux motors and a newly developed high-performance battery, the drive train enabled continuous electric output and ultra-fast charging. The vehicle was able to repeatedly drive to its limits during this test and showcased a new level of sustained performance that was previously unimaginable in the electric vehicle world. The battery maintained optimal temperature ranges even during high-intensity driving, ensuring not only stable performance but also the capability for ultra-fast charging.
Axial flux motors are much smaller and lighter than conventional electric motors while delivering even more powerful output. Their power density is about three times that of existing electric motors, which means they can reproduce the highest levels of driving performance more frequently and repeatedly.
Inspired by Formula 1®, the high-performance battery developed by Mercedes-AMG can produce high output repeatedly, contributing to the vehicle's outstanding performance. Additionally, with ultra-fast charging capabilities of 850 kilowatts, it can recharge enough energy to drive approximately 400 kilometers in about 5 minutes according to WLTP standards.
