Hyundai Motor Company and Kia announced on the 24th that they have achieved cumulative sales of 1.5 million eco-friendly vehicles in the U.S. market, continuing steady growth.
Since starting sales of the Sonata hybrid and K5 hybrid in the U.S. market in 2011, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia have recorded cumulative sales of 1,515,145 units as of July. This is a combined result for Hyundai Motor Company (870,821 units) and Kia (644,324 units).
According to market research firm Wards Intelligence, the U.S. eco-friendly vehicle market reached 1,749,390 units in the first half of this year, a 21.7% increase from the same period last year (1,437,395 units).
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia plan to enhance their eco-friendly vehicle competitiveness in the U.S. by diversifying their eco-friendly vehicle lineup and improving product competitiveness, along with a flexible production system as sales proportions of eco-friendly vehicles continue to increase.
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia surpassed cumulative sales of 500,000 units in the U.S. eco-friendly vehicle market in 2022, 11 years after entering the market in 2011, achieving remarkable milestones of 1 million units in 2024 and 1.5 million units last month.
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia's annual sales of eco-friendly vehicles first exceeded 100,000 units in 2021 with 110,634 units sold, and continued to rise significantly with sales of 182,627 units in 2022, 278,122 units in 2023, and a projected 346,441 units in 2024. As of July this year, sales of 221,565 units have increased by more than 20% compared to the same period last year (184,346 units), with expectations for a record-breaking annual performance depending on the results in the second half.
The proportion of eco-friendly vehicles in Hyundai Motor Company and Kia's total sales in the U.S. steadily increased, surpassing 20% for the first time last year at 20.3%, and currently accounting for 21.1% from January to July this year. This means that 2 out of every 10 Hyundai Motor Company and Kia vehicles sold in the U.S. are eco-friendly.
Looking at the sales status by eco-friendly vehicle type, hybrids surpassed cumulative sales of 1 million units in February, and as of now, 1,138,502 units have been sold, followed by electric vehicles with 374,790 units and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with 1,853 units.
The most sold model in the U.S. market for Hyundai Motor Company is the Tucson hybrid. The Tucson hybrid started selling in the U.S. in 2021, with sales reaching 197,929 units as of July. It is followed by the Sonata hybrid (192,941 units) and the Ioniq 5 (126,363 units).
Kia's Niro hybrid has sold 183,106 units since it was launched in the U.S. in 2017. It is followed by the Sportage hybrid (129,113 units) and the Sorento hybrid (80,638 units).
The number of eco-friendly vehicle models from Hyundai Motor Company and Kia has significantly increased from the two initial models, Sonata hybrid and K5 hybrid, in 2011, to 19 models including 8 hybrids (including PHEVs), 10 electric vehicles, and 1 hydrogen fuel cell vehicle as of now based on the sales vehicle classification in the U.S.
Among them, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia have aggressively introduced eco-friendly vehicle models, launching a hybrid model of the Avante, which has been selected as 'North American Car of the Year' twice, and adding hybrid models like the Tucson, Santa Fe, and Sorento in the sports utility vehicle (SUV) category. They are also focusing on electric vehicle sales with various lineups including dedicated electric vehicles such as the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Ioniq 9, EV6, and EV9 based on the dedicated electric vehicle platform E-GMP to lead the transition to electrification in the U.S.
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia plan to expand their lineup by launching various eco-friendly vehicles including the all-new Palisade hybrid, a flagship large SUV, and the compact EV sedan EV4 in the U.S. market. Additionally, they plan to respond to the U.S. eco-friendly vehicle market through the Hyundai Motor Group Meta Plant America (HMGMA), which started mass production in October last year, along with the Hyundai Motor Company factory in Alabama and the Kia factory in Georgia.
