Smoke was reported at the Shin-Kori Unit 1 Nuclear Power Plant in Gijang County, Busan, prompting a response from firefighters.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power stated that the turbine generator of Shin-Kori Unit 1 automatically shut down around 3:46 a.m. on the 21st due to a malfunction of an auxiliary device called an exciter. The exciter is an auxiliary device that helps the generator produce electricity.
According to the firefighting authorities, a report was received around 3:50 a.m. that "smoke was coming from the Shin-Kori Unit 1 nuclear power plant." When firefighters arrived, there were no flames, only smoke. There were no casualties as a result of this incident.
A KHNP official noted, "We are currently investigating the detailed cause, and the power plant remains in a stable condition."
