The Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Small Enterprise & Market Service (SEMAS) announced that they will conduct the '2025 Traditional Market and Shopping District Population and Status Integrated Survey' from August 18 to October 17 to assess the overall status of traditional markets and shopping districts as a basis for policy formulation.
The status survey is an approved statistic by the Statistics Korea, following Article 9 of the Special Act on the Promotion of Traditional Markets and Shopping Districts and Article 18 of the Statistics Act, and has been conducting field surveys every year since 2006 through surveyors to understand the operational status of traditional markets and shopping districts.
This survey targets merchant representatives and approximately 300,000 store owners of enterprises in traditional markets and shopping districts nationwide. The merchant representatives will be surveyed about the general status, organization, facilities, fire prevention, and firefighting facilities of the markets and shopping districts, while the stores will primarily be asked about the enterprise status and store services.
In addition, this survey will include alley-style shopping districts expanding nationwide, and new questions regarding the intention to introduce smart ordering within the next year will be set up to assess the current situation.
The results of the survey will be posted on the Small Business 24 website and the Korean Statistical Information Service website and will be used as basic data for future support policy formulation. The responses will be strictly protected in accordance with Articles 33 and 34 of the Statistics Act.
Park Seong-hyo, director of Small Enterprise & Market Service (SEMAS), said, 'Because traditional markets and shopping districts are the roots of our local economy, we intend to identify the management status and difficulties of traditional markets and shopping districts in detail through this survey and establish support policies tailored to the field.' He also noted, 'To create accurate and effective policies, we ask for your active cooperation in the status survey, even if you are busy with your livelihood.'
