BMW's flagship premium sedan, the 5 Series, has surpassed 10,000 units in sales for the first half of the year. From January to June this year, a total of 12,786 units were sold, an increase of about 15% compared to the same period last year (11,159 units).
The BMW 5 Series, which comes with a solid lineup of features from the base model, provides a wealth of options for consumers with its various powertrains, achieving continued popularity this year. The 8th generation BMW 5 Series, first launched in the domestic market in 2023, includes the PHEV (plug-in hybrid) model BMW 530e xDrive, the high-performance PHEV model BMW 550e xDrive, and the all-wheel-drive electric model BMW i5 xDrive40, totaling 10 powertrains currently available.
The most sold model in the BMW 5 Series lineup this year is the BMW 520i. A total of 7,116 units of the BMW 520i were sold in the first half, gaining great popularity as it is equipped with preferred features and advanced functions among domestic consumers. Features such as adaptive LED headlights with high beam assist, the BMW curved display that helps drivers focus on driving, the BMW head-up display, and sportier 19-inch wheels are all included as standard.
Advanced driver assistance systems are equipped at the highest level. The BMW 520i comes standard with driving assistant professional, which includes active cruise control with stop and go functionality, lane keeping assist, and front and rear collision and collision warning systems. The parking assistant plus, which includes parking and reversing assist and a surround view, is also provided as standard, supporting safe and comfortable driving.
The BMW 5 Series lineup is structured according to BMW Group's 'Power of Choice' strategy, which provides consumers with diverse options. It is available with two gasoline powertrains, two diesel powertrains, three PHEV models, and three electric powertrains. Among them, the PHEV models BMW 530e and 530e xDrive, as well as 550e xDrive, sold a total of 1,599 units in the first half, with sales of the 5 Series PHEV increasing more than four times compared to the same period last year.
This year, the most sold PHEV model in the domestic market is the BMW 530e (including xDrive), with 1,512 units delivered in the first half. The BMW 530e produces a combined maximum output of 299 horsepower and achieves a combined fuel efficiency of 15.9 km per liter. Furthermore, it can travel up to 73 km on a single charge (according to the Ministry of Environment certification), offering eco-friendliness at the level of pure electric vehicles for everyday life.
The high-performance PHEV model BMW 550e combines a BMW TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder gasoline engine producing 313 horsepower with a 197-horsepower BMW 5th generation eDrive electric motor, achieving a combined maximum output of 489 horsepower and maximum torque of 71.4 kg·m. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. Nevertheless, it can travel 62 km (according to the Ministry of Environment certification) solely on the electric motor, appealing to customers who prefer strong performance.
Additionally, the pure electric premium sedan, the BMW i5, recorded sales of 828 units in the first half, making it the top seller among its class of electric vehicles.
The BMW 5 Series has established itself as a model representing both BMW and the domestic imported car market with its timeless luxurious sensibility and excellent product quality. First sold in Korea by BMW Korea in 1995, the BMW 5 Series is set to sell nearly 300,000 units in the domestic market by June 2025, solidifying its position as a best-selling model. Reflecting this popularity and the importance of the Korean market, the BMW Group launched the BMW 5 Series worldwide for the first time in Korea.
