Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power is accelerating efforts to apply for standard design approval for the innovative small modular reactor (SMR) in December this year.
KHNP is conducting the '2nd concentrated review meeting on the safety analysis report of the innovative SMR standard design' over five days at COEX in Seoul starting from the 16th, discussing safety-related issues. KHNP plans to prepare a draft of the approval documents, which consist of over 1,200 items, during this meeting. Around September, it plans to hold a tripartite independent review meeting to prepare a final version for submission to regulatory agencies. Previously, KHNP held the 1st concentrated review meeting on the safety analysis report of the SMR standard design in February.
The innovative SMR development project, led by the government since 2023, aims to obtain approval by 2028. To this end, KHNP holds a regular comprehensive coordination meeting for the SMR standard design every month, and since July 2023, it has been conducting preliminary design reviews to enhance the design completeness of the innovative SMR.
Shin Ho-cheol, head of the KHNP Central Research Institute, said, "We are closely communicating with government agencies and the industry to successfully complete the innovative SMR development project," and noted, "In the future, I hope the innovative SMR can be utilized for multiple purposes, including safe electricity production, desalination, district heating, and hydrogen production both domestically and internationally."
