The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced that it will recruit corporations to participate in the digital-based automated MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification of carbon emissions) solution supply project from the 19th of this month until the 24th of next month.
According to the Ministry of SMEs and Startups on the 18th, MRV is a core competency that small and medium-sized enterprises need to have in response to international carbon regulations, such as the carbon border adjustment mechanism, product carbon footprint, and life cycle greenhouse gas emissions assessment.
The 'digital-based automated MRV solution supply' project is initiated this year to prepare for the carbon border adjustment mechanism, which will be fully implemented next year, allowing small and medium-sized enterprises with poor dedicated organizations and professional workforce to respond to carbon regulations that require expertise.
The carbon border adjustment mechanism is a system that imposes tariffs proportionate to the carbon emissions of products when those products are imported into the EU.
Through this, it provides comprehensive services including software that calculates carbon emissions based on energy consumption such as electricity, hardware for measuring energy usage by process and equipment, and data communication devices, as well as verification by specialized institutions to ensure the reliability of the emission calculation values.
Small and medium-sized enterprises that directly or indirectly export items subject to the carbon border adjustment mechanism to the EU can form a consortium with small and medium-sized enterprises providing automated MRV solutions to apply.
Meanwhile, on the 18th, the government held the second joint government briefing on responding to the 2025 EU carbon border adjustment mechanism at the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises KBIZ Hall. Attendees from small and medium-sized enterprises were introduced to the guideline for SMEs regarding the carbon border adjustment mechanism and the digital-based automated MRV solution supply project.
