Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) on mutual cooperation in the small modular reactor (SMR) sector on the 10th, local time, in Nonthaburi, Thailand.
The two companies agreed to cooperate through the MOU by focusing on the exchange of technology information related to SMR, jointly reviewing the possibility of introducing a Thailand-customized SMR, developing human resources through field tours and training programs, and activating research and development (R&D) cooperation and human and technology exchanges through the establishment of a working-level consultative body.
EGAT produces about 30% of Thailand's electricity and is reviewing the expansion of low-carbon energy sources, including nuclear power, to achieve its 'carbon neutrality 2050' goal and diversify its energy mix. Thidade Eiamsai, vice president of EGAT, noted, "SMR is a promising technology that can simultaneously achieve energy security and carbon neutrality," adding, "This cooperation with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, which has world-class nuclear power operation experience, expertise, and technical know-how, will greatly contribute to EGAT's power transition strategy."
Park In-sik, head of the export business division of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, said, "This agreement is an important starting point for sharing KHNP's technological capabilities as a partner in Thailand's energy transition," and added, "We will continue to work closely with EGAT to build a sustainable energy future for Thailand while also fully entering the SMR market in Thailand and the ASEAN region and establishing a cooperation model that contributes to global energy transition."
