HD Hyundai announced on the 2nd that it will participate in Nor-Shipping 2025, the world's largest shipbuilding and maritime exhibition, to share its future vision, including securing leadership in decarbonization technology.
Nor-Shipping 2025 will be held in Oslo, Norway, from the 3rd for four days. Approximately 800 corporations from 47 countries will attend, and more than 30,000 visitors are expected.
Top executives of the group, including HD Hyundai Vice Chairman Jeong Gi-seon, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries CEO Lee Sang-kyun, and Director Jang Kwang-pil of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering's Future Technology Research Institute, will attend.
On the 4th, HD Hyundai will obtain basic certification for the cargo operation and fuel system of a next-generation high-pressure dual-fuel (ME-GI) liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, independently developed by the American Bureau of Shipping.
HD Hyundai expects that through this system, it will minimize cargo loss by compressing and re-supplying boil-off gas, replacing the ultra-low temperature high-pressure compressor, and significantly contribute to improving the operational efficiency and economy for shipowners.
HD Hyundai will also sign a memorandum of understanding with the French engineering company GTT to jointly develop a trapezoidal membrane cargo hold. The membrane cargo hold is designed to be utilized up to the bow area according to the hull shape, optimizing transport capacity and enhancing operational efficiency.
Additionally, HD Hyundai will proceed with an agreement with Lloyd's Register (LR) for the joint development of a hybrid LNG carrier based on a high-efficiency solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). HD Hyundai will be in charge of system development and design while LR will provide technical consulting.
To propose policies for the transition to decarbonization, HD Hyundai will also establish a strategic partnership with the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. MMMCZCS is a non-profit research institution that develops decarbonization fuel technologies with over 90 partners worldwide.
An HD Hyundai official noted, "As the world's number one shipbuilder, HD Hyundai is accelerating the development of future ultra-competitive eco-friendly ship technologies," and added, "We will continue to lead the decarbonization of the sea through continuous technological innovation and expanding cooperation with global corporations."
