Hanwha Ocean announced on the 2nd that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Lloyd's Register (RL) for cooperation in design certification and quality assurance for the export of overseas naval vessels.
This agreement is a strategic measure to ensure the design reliability and safety that meet the international certification standards required by the navies of major export target countries, thereby enhancing Hanwha Ocean's export competitiveness in the global defense industry market.
The signing ceremony took place on the 30th of last month at the Busan BEXCO International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX) 2025, with Vice President Jung Seung-kyun, head of Hanwha Ocean's Special Ship Overseas Business Division, and Hong Chung-sik, Vice President of Lloyd's Register's Far East Asia business, among other officials from both companies present.
The two companies plan to establish a comprehensive cooperation system through collaboration, including ▲ design review and certification ▲ establishment of quality management processes for interpreting technical regulations and joint technical marketing targeted at the governments and navies of export countries.
Hanwha Ocean expects that through its cooperation with Lloyd's Register, which reflects technical requirements equivalent to NATO's naval construction standards in the Naval Ship Rules, the vessels it constructs will secure reliability in design and construction from navies around the world. The register is an independent third party that verifies whether ships are safely designed and constructed and certifies their compliance.
With this agreement, Hanwha Ocean aims to apply Lloyd's Register's naval construction standards from the design phase, obtaining the level of design certification (Approval in Principle) required by overseas customers and systematically securing safety and compliance throughout the construction phase. Furthermore, the company plans to accelerate its entry into advanced foreign naval markets such as Europe.
Vice President Jung Seung-kyun said, "By accommodating various requirements from each country and having the register formally certify them, we have created an opportunity to enhance our competitiveness," adding, "As a leader in K-defense, we will do our utmost to deliver good news on orders through exemplary cooperation with the world-renowned register, Lloyd's."
