The non-ferrous metal materials corporation LS MnM announced on the 14th that it has registered its own production electrowon (high-purity copper produced by electrolysis) brands 'ONSAN I' and 'ONSAN II' with the highest grade 'Grade 1' at the New York Commodity Exchange (COMEX).
The New York Commodity Exchange is considered one of the top three non-ferrous metal exchanges in the world, along with the London Metal Exchange (LME) and the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE). With this registration, LS MnM successfully received the highest grade certification from the top three non-ferrous metal exchanges. LS MnM's electrowon was registered at the highest grade of 'Grade A' at both the London Metal Exchange and the Shanghai Futures Exchange in 2000 and 2009.
To be registered as 'Grade 1' at the New York Commodity Exchange, it must pass the strict chemical and physical standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). It must consist of copper with a minimum purity of 99.95% without any impurities, and it should not break or insulate under normal handling.
LS MnM is currently producing 600,000 tons (t) of electrowon, which accounts for approximately 95.2% of South Korea's domestic electrowon production. Of this, about 180,000 tons are exported abroad.
