POSCO Engineering & Construction issued an apology regarding the collapse of the underground tunnel on the Shin Ansan Line that occurred on the 11th, stating it would implement thorough measures to prevent a recurrence.
On the 16th, shortly after a worker missing at the construction site was found dead, CEO Jeong Hee-min, in a letter of apology, stated, "I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families," and noted, "We will prepare thorough measures to prevent a recurrence and strengthen the on-site safety management system."
He added, "I hope for the speedy recovery of the individual who was rescued," and "I deeply apologize to the local residents who have experienced anxiety and inconvenience due to this incident."
Additionally, he emphasized, "We will take responsibility for this incident and mobilize all means to provide our best support," adding that "we will work closely with relevant agencies to swiftly identify the cause of the accident and mobilize all capabilities to restore normalcy as soon as possible."
Previously, on the 11th, an accident occurred at the Shin Ansan Line construction site in Gyeonggi's Gwangmyeong, where the underground tunnel and upper road collapsed, burying two employees. One worker in his 50s was found dead six days after the incident.
The Shin Ansan Line is a dual-track electric railway connecting Yeouido in Seoul with Ansan and Siheung in Gyeonggi. POSCO Engineering & Construction has been responsible for the construction of Section 5-2 of the Shin Ansan Line dual-track railway, conducting the underground tunnel work.
