Hanwha Aerospace announced on the 13th that it has received Approval In Principle (AIP) certification from DNV, a world-renowned classification society. AIP is a procedure that verifies the stability of technology application and compliance with international regulations from the basic design stage when constructing vessels equipped with new technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells.

Hanwha Aerospace explained that it has become possible to actively sell hydrogen fuel cells for vessels in the global market by obtaining this DNV certification following last year's Korea Register (KR) AIP certification.

The hydrogen fuel cell that received DNV certification this time is a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). It is stable and highly energy-efficient, making it suitable for transportation applications such as vessels, as it can generate power even at low temperatures. Additionally, with parallel control functionality, it can be scaled to megawatt (MW) capacities, making it applicable to medium and large vessels.

A Hanwha Aerospace official noted, "We will secure type certification for ship fuel cells, the next step after AIP, and continuously ensure technological competitiveness in the ship development market applying carbon-free propulsion systems in conjunction with Hanwha Ocean."
