The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) announced on the 11th that it held an inauguration ceremony for new Secretary-General Kim Sang-hyup at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul.
GGGI was established in June 2010 as a domestic non-governmental organization (NGO) to support low-carbon green growth in developing countries and was transitioned to an international organization in 2012. Its headquarters is located in Jeongdong, Seoul, and currently, 49 member countries are enrolled.
Kim became the first Korean to serve as Secretary-General of GGGI, following the appointments of individuals from the United States, Australia, and the Netherlands. In his inaugural speech, he noted, "I aim to strengthen the three principles of GGGI: innovation, collaboration, and trust," adding, "I will make GGGI an indispensable international asset." His term lasts for four years until 2028.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Tae-yul said in his congratulatory remarks that "the coming years will be an even more important time for GGGI" and expressed pride in being a founding member nation of GGGI, which strives to be a green ladder for sustainable global development.
Kim served as the Green Growth Planning Officer at the Blue House during the Lee Myung-bak administration and led the establishment of the national strategy for green growth and the first national basic plan as Chairperson of the Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee in the Yoon Suk-yeol administration.
