Kim Dong-myung, CEO of LG Energy Solution, said, "LG Energy Solution has the most battery-related intellectual property (IP). We aim to leverage this strength to gain an edge over Chinese companies in the competition."
On the 5th, Kim met with reporters at 'InterBattery 2025,' the largest domestic battery industry exhibition held at COEX in Gangnam, Seoul.
Kim noted regarding the global battery market outlook for this year, "I think the first quarter or around the first half will be the low point, and things might improve from the second half. However, the situation is quite volatile, so we need to keep a close watch."
Regarding the tariffs imposed by the United States on Canada and Mexico, Kim said, "I understand that the new administration's fundamental policy direction encourages domestic production in the United States. We already have many factories in the U.S., so we have the advantage of early entry. We plan to make good use of those."
Regarding the push for new production bases, Kim stated, "We are continuously looking for markets and regions with various opportunities. Although I cannot specify a concrete location yet, we are making ongoing efforts."
At this exhibition, LG Energy Solution publicly unveiled its next-generation cylindrical battery, the 46 series cell lineup (4680, 4695, 46120), for the first time. This product increases energy and output by at least five times compared to the existing battery (2170) and is regarded as a 'game changer' in the future cylindrical market.
Additionally, LG Energy Solution showcased solar mobility vehicles from the U.S. solar electric vehicle startup 'Aptera Motors,' which will be equipped with its batteries. Prior to this, LG Energy Solution announced its supply plan for Aptera Motors at the CES 2025, the world's largest electronics and information technology exhibition, held in January in the U.S.
'InterBattery' is hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and co-organized by the Korea Battery Industry Association (KIBA), COEX, and the Korea International Trade Association. It has been held since 2013, marking its 13th edition this year.
